A 50-Win Streak Falls in Los Angeles
Eighteen tournaments, 8,174 matches, ten organizations. Violet Ruby Rothermel ends Ariel Freitas Barbosa's 50-0 run at IBJJF LA. Grappling Industries Syracuse and Reno combine for 1,580 matches.
Ariel Freitas Barbosa of Marcio Andre BJJ carries a 50-0 career record into the Los Angeles Winter Kids International Open. Violet Ruby Rothermel, a grey belt from Art of Jiu Jitsu rated at 2,520 Jits, ends it. Barbosa leaves LA at 50-1.
Eighteen tournaments across ten organizations produce 8,174 matches this weekend. GS XV Gi Youth in Stockton leads with 1,606. Grappling Industries Reno adds 841, and Grappling Industries Syracuse runs 739 — back-to-back weekends of volume from the coasts to the heartland.
Star Performances
Two submissions and a points win. Gold medal. His submission over Jose Gregorio De Jesus L. Rivas of Pablo Silva BJJ closes a 2,800-Jits gap.
Perfect weekend: three submissions, two points wins, gold medal. Five matches, five wins, zero doubt.
Six wins in a single day. Four submissions, two points wins, gold. The highest match count among all MVPs this weekend.
One match, one win, one gold medal, and the largest Jits gain of any fighter this weekend. Quality over quantity.
Willem Acuff of Reaction MMA/SAS Team does something only a handful of fighters manage each weekend: six consecutive wins in a single tournament. Four of them end by submission. At Newbreed Louisville, where the field runs 142 matches deep, that kind of volume matters.
Meanwhile at AGF Arkansas State, Jace McCoy runs through his bracket with a submission over Jose Gregorio De Jesus L. Rivas of Pablo Silva BJJ — closing a 2,800-Jits gap in the process. McCoy enters the weekend unranked. He leaves with a gold medal and a number.
The Deep Brackets
The JJWL double-header in Stockton dominates the bracket depth this weekend. GS XV Gi Youth and GS XV NoGi Youth combine for 3,187 matches across 1,514 competitors — the largest single-venue output of the season so far.
At FUJI BJJ Indiana State, 646 matches run through Noblesville with a 58% submission rate. Grappling Industries Reno produces 841 matches with Mendes Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu collecting 39 medals to lead the field. And at AGF Arkansas State, 516 matches push through Conway with Westside BJJ earning 59 medals.
Maxwell Webb of Laselva MMA goes 5-1 at Newbreed Wichita with four submissions, earning gold in a field where the top seeds are favored to cruise.
Upsets and Surprises
Magee beats Carter Jr by points despite a 3,470-Jits deficit. Then does it again later in the same tournament by submission.
Takes down an AOJ grey belt rated at 5,180 Jits at the IBJJF LA Kids International Open.
Submits a 4,460-Jits Zenith BJJ yellow belt. The third-widest upset of the weekend.
Wins 12-0 on points against a 5,080-Jits grey belt at GS XV in Stockton.
The streak breakers tell the bigger story this weekend. Beyond Barbosa's 50-0 falling in LA, Phoebe Dimmer (28-0) loses to Kate Escamilla at FUJI Indiana State. August Rain Lawler sees a 26-win streak snapped by Aleksandr Karbanovich at IBJJF LA. And Lemar Saidy drops a 22-win run to Koa Singson at GS XV in Stockton.
Kolt Isaac Fannin enters Newbreed Louisville on a 16-win streak. Jonathan Johnson ends it by submission — and Johnson is a blue belt who trails Fannin 1-4 in their head-to-head series.
