Star Performances
Five submissions in five matches. Finishes every opponent, including a 2,740-Jits upset over Michael Carter Jr of Freedom Jiu-Jitsu Collective.
Twelve wins, ten by submission. The highest match volume of any undefeated fighter this weekend.
Three submissions, gold medal. Gains 4,490 Jits on a perfect run through the ADCC bracket.
Four submissions, gold medal. Runs through the JJWL Houston no-gi bracket without leaving a match to the judges.
The weekend belongs to Grahym Fannaly. Five matches at AGF Biloxi, five submissions, gold medal, and the largest single-tournament Jits gain among all MVPs. His path includes a submission of Michael Carter Jr, an orange belt rated nearly 2,800 Jits higher.
At Newbreed Coral Springs, Wesley Grey Reid puts together something harder to do than a perfect record — a perfect record over twelve matches. Ten of those end by submission. Reid finishes the weekend at 4,310 Jits and a grey belt from Rilion Gracie Miami Lakes that most fighters in the bracket probably knew about before the draw was posted.
The Deep Brackets
Grappling Industries Virginia Beach produces the deepest brackets of the weekend. Leonidas Albert Shakhnazarov of Ascension Athletics — rated 7,641 Jits, the highest-rated fighter in any deep bracket this week — wins five straight in the 6-7 year old no-gi intermediate division. Noah Starr of 10th Planet Georgetown, Benjamin McConnell of Brabo Academy, Robert Sprouse Jr of Modern American MMA, Kiera Bre Thomas of Ares BJJ, and Abram Thomas Bowen of Six Blades each win five in their own divisions. Six five-win bracket runs at a single tournament.
In Boise, Grayson Giurlani of Trujitsu - Bakersfield BJJ goes six deep in the 6-7 year old white belt gi division. Jordan Bottrell of Academy 231 matches that at Grappling Industries Grand Rapids. Vincent Torres of 10th Planet San Antonio takes five at the ADCC US Open in the 15-17 advanced division.
Upsets and Surprises
Perez edges a 6,240-Jits yellow belt on points. A grey belt from Cobra Kai rated at 1,010 Jits had no business being in this match. He wins it anyway.
Calzadilla takes down a 5,210-Jits advanced-level competitor on points in the 15-17 bracket at ADCC.
Ballard, a yellow belt rated 2,120 Jits, beats a 6,120-Jits green belt on points in No Gi Kids Challenger.
Rosario beats a green belt rated nearly 4,000 Jits higher by a score of 6-2 in the JJWL Jr Teen bracket.
Beyond the top four upsets, the streak-breaking headlines are where this weekend gets loud. Anthony Allen sees his 34-win streak snapped by Josiah Smith at Grappling Industries Grand Rapids. Yara Rubino of Renzo Gracie Academy loses for the first time in her career at 26-0 when Mariana Jackson gets her at JJWL New Jersey IV. Sebastian Rocha (25-0) falls at Newbreed Coral Springs. Noa Yamashiro (24-0) drops at the Hawaii Triple Crown. Four fighters with 20-plus win streaks lose on the same weekend. That does not happen often.
