NAGA (North American Grappling Association)
NAGA (North American Grappling Association) is one of the largest and most accessible grappling tournament organizations in the United States. Founded in 1995, NAGA hosts events across the country nearly every weekend, offering both gi and no-gi divisions for all ages and skill levels. NAGA is known for its high volume of events, large turnout, and relatively affordable registration fees, making it a popular choice for competitors of all experience levels.
NAGA uses a skill-level system (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Expert) rather than belt-based divisions, though belt rank is considered during registration. This system attempts to group competitors by actual experience and ability rather than solely by belt rank. NAGA offers divisions for kids as young as 4 years old, with age-appropriate match times and rules. The organization hosts both grappling (BJJ rules) and MMA-style grappling events. NAGA's submission rules tend to be slightly more permissive than IBJJF — for example, some leg locks may be legal at lower skill levels compared to IBJJF.
For youth competitors and their parents, NAGA events are widely recommended as a good entry point into competition. The events are frequent, widespread, and welcoming to first-time competitors. The skill-level system means new competitors are more likely to face opponents of similar experience. NAGA events tend to have large divisions, which means your child is likely to get multiple matches. The registration process is straightforward through the NAGA website. On JITS.GG, NAGA results are tracked and contribute to competitor profiles and ratings.
