IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation)

The IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation) is the largest and most prestigious BJJ competition organization in the world. Founded in 1994 by Carlos Gracie Jr., the IBJJF sanctions events globally including the World Championships (Mundials), Pan American Championships, European Open, and numerous national and regional opens. IBJJF rules are considered the standard for sport BJJ and are adopted or adapted by many other organizations.

The IBJJF has the most structured and detailed ruleset in BJJ competition. They enforce strict gi specifications, require athlete registration and academy affiliation, and maintain a comprehensive set of rules governing legal and illegal techniques by belt level and age group. IBJJF events require membership and registration through their website, and competitors must present valid ID and proof of belt rank. Match times vary by belt and age (e.g., 5 minutes for adult white belts, 10 minutes for adult black belts, 2-4 minutes for kids depending on age). The IBJJF also governs belt promotion standards, including minimum time-at-rank requirements.

For youth competitors and their parents, IBJJF events represent the pinnacle of kids' competition. IBJJF Kids World Championships is the most prestigious youth BJJ event in the world. However, IBJJF events tend to be more expensive and formally structured than other organizations. Registration requires an IBJJF membership (annual fee), event registration fees, and adherence to strict uniform and documentation requirements. Despite the higher barriers to entry, IBJJF events offer exceptional organization, professional refereeing, and the most competitive brackets. On JITS.GG, IBJJF results are a core component of competitor profiles and ratings.
