Coach Challenge

A coach challenge (also called a video review request) is a formal protest filed by a coach during or immediately after a match to request video review of a referee's scoring decision. The challenge system was introduced to improve accuracy in scoring and reduce errors that can affect match outcomes. Not all organizations or tournaments support coach challenges — they require video recording infrastructure and review officials.

In IBJJF competition, coach challenges are available at major events (World Championships, Pans, European Open, etc.) but are not available at local or regional events. The coach must file the challenge during a specific window after the disputed call, and a review committee watches the video and either upholds or reverses the decision. The challenge may require a fee that is refunded if the challenge is successful. NAGA and AGF do not typically offer formal video review systems at most events. Grappling Industries does not use coach challenges.

For youth competitors, coach challenges are rarely available because most kids' tournaments are local events without video review infrastructure. However, at IBJJF Worlds and major IBJJF events with kids' divisions, the system may be available. Parents should know that only the registered coach (not parents in the stands) can file a challenge, and it must be done through the proper channels — yelling at a referee from the stands is never acceptable and can result in the coach or spectator being removed from the venue.
